Good Afternoon family,
Like many of you, I am deeply bothered by the events surrounding the tragic murder of Trayvon Martin. While we don’t know all of the facts surrounding what happened that evening, we do know that a child has lost his life, a family has lost their son and many are losing hope in our justice system.
In addition, several media outlets have suggested that because Trayvon was African-American and wearing a hoodie that evening, he was automatically a suspicious character. Geraldo Rivera even stated that the hoodie itself was just as responsible for his murder as George Zimmerman (the guy who pulled the trigger). As a college-educated, African-American business owner who has never been arrested, yet loves wearing hoodies, I was deeply offended by this. As a Christian, however, I know the root of any discrimination is ultimately our sinful nature and pray that those who share these kinds of idealogies will come to know Christ in such a way that they are able to repent from this line of thinking.
Over the weekend, a good friend of mine, Pierre Coleman of Solid Brick Entertainment, thought it would be a great idea to gather African-American men from our city, Newark, NJ, to film a Public Service Announcement that would present African-American men in a different light. Pierre was able to gather business owners, fathers, college students, filmakers and future doctors and lawyers together to show the inaccuracies of how we are often portrayed in media. The result is a riveting two-minute video that has begun to re-shape how many view African-American men.
The video above is actually the PSA and features my sons and I along with the other brothers who believed in this cause. I encourage you to view the PSA, pass it along to your family, friends and co-workers and even discuss it with your children. We can combat racial stereotyping thru dialogue and education. I challenge you to join the fight today.
